Batman: Year One

When I watched the movie Batman Begins a year ago, it became one of my favourite superhero movies; and definitely the top Batman movie of the franchise, to my mind. I recently had the chance to read the graphic novel, Batman: Year One, by Frank Miller. You may have heard of Miller by his recent successful film, Sin City; but in the 80's he was the pre-eminent interpreter of the Dark Knight.

This book was an excellent read and is adult oriented. This is not the Batman and Robin of the 60's television show with all its camp. This is a gritty, "film noir" story with adult themes that tells the story of Batman's beginnings. It's quickly evident that the movie owes a great debt to this book. Maybe you would turn your nose up at reading a mere "comic", or you may believe that comics are a medium best left to a childhood long past. If that's the case, this story will prove you wrong. Frank Miller shows his brilliance in the art of story-telling, in this tale of the Dark Knight born.
