In praise of the 5K

I often think that I should be running 5K races. I haven't done many and maybe on an unconscious level I'm avoiding them. This, to me, is a tough distance. Despite that, this is the distance I need to work on as pure speed is not my strongest asset. Working on speed and the discomfort a 5K brings would transfer well over to longer distances. My hometown doesn't offer too many races period, and to go out of town specifically for a 5K race can seem like a stretch. I'm going to have to work on this.

The 5K race distance is the most popular race distance in America but is losing ground to the longer distances. Here's an article in praise of the 5K.

Went to the gym and ran on the treadmill tonight. Minutes after being on it, I immediately regretted not having gone for a run outside, as the weather was overcast and actually ideal for running. As my tedium grew and I was fighting the boredom, I recall that a good friend's coach once said about training: "sometimes you have to get used to being bored". No truer words have ever been said. I ran easy for 9K at 7.8mph (that's 7:41/mile) and during the last k, ran 2X1:00 at 10.4mph. It was nice to get the legs really moving for those one minute bursts. Not a bad run, as I tried to love being bored!

This is all very interesting, but I see nothing about beer or the Habs. I also noticed that you've forgotten to mention that even in my state, I could probably do a faster mile.

Good article link on the 5 Km races. I love em'. Short and sweet!
A fun one is the Bazan Bay 5 km ( Sydney, Victoria BC) that I ran this year in the spring. It has good food afterwards and prizes--very important.

Hey is that pic a hometown view?? Very Pretty.
