Being the consummate procrastinator, on a day off work today no less, cost me a proper workout. Putting off my run till late in the afternoon before Sarah had to work, made me able to only squeeze in an 8K run at the gym today. I ran at 4:40/k pace (7.9 mph/1.0 incline) for just under 40 min.
It's runs like this, when I reflect on them, that are not giving me the volume on my easy days that I need. This will have to improve, I think, if I want to improve. Despite a short run, I felt great during it, and it bodes well for future runs at this pace.
Paul Tergat talks about retirement and how it's just around the corner. This comment caught me off guard as I'm on the wrong side of 35: "They say life begins at 40, but in athletics, that is when life ends. I am approaching there and may soon be out of action" . I guess to be fair, he's talking about elite, world-class competitors.

This is a guy with the WR we're talking about. I think guys like Bill Rodgers who have continued to race past their prime after running at such a high level are the exception, not the rule. Might be like going from driving Formula one to a old Volvo station wagon.
Another thought is that these guys typically trained VERY HARD for a a very long time. They started so young in most cases that they reached a peak earlier in their careers than the old guys like us who started much later. This thought gives me hope as I, like you, hope to still have some of my best days ahead.
When we slow down I guess we'll go golfing together.
You're bang on with the fact these elites have trained hard for decades. I suppose they just get tired and look forward to slowing down.
