Hard effort on the XC course

Making it home from Vancouver this afternoon, we found our fair burgh bathed in beautiful sunlight. The skies broke just long enough for me to head to the XC loops for a tough VO2 max workout. If my coach's objective in this workout is to take me out of my comfort zone, he has succeeded in spades.

The workout was an improvement over the same one last week though, with my pacing improving a bit. On the final couple of loops I could feel my arms tighten up and my form start to fade. I really have to work on keeping my head up during these harder efforts. It's a tendency of mine to not be looking up, and have my head drift downwards, looking at the ground when the going gets tough. I realize it, correct it, and then find my eyes slowly start casting their gaze just in front of me. I'm really going to work on this next week when I do this workout.

Finishing the workout, I was gasping for breath, was in a slight daze, and walked to my car to get a towel. I soaked my legs in the ocean to give them a good post exercise chill. The spot at second beach just below the XC course is ideal for wading in. I think I need to pick up some water shoes for getting in at the rocky beach closer to home.

The running gods were looking down on me after finishing up, the weather soon turned dark, black and foreboding.
