With the first snowfall of the year, my plans for a quality workout at the track or on the XC course were thrown out the window. The snow looks nice but it wreaks havoc on drivers and runners alike. According to my coach, when conditions or circumstances throw my quality session up in the air, I'm to run easy instead. He doesn't want me to do the quality workouts on the treadmill. This is one of the few times I've contradicted my coach, and as I'm not wont to lie, I'll lay it out below.
As the XC course was covered in slippery snow and ditto for the track, my only option was to mimic the tempo-track workout on the treadmill. I could have run easy instead today of course, but I was itching to run fast and not miss a tough workout.
The run itself on the treadmill was pretty boring, as time slows down on it. I set the treadmill for the equivalent pace I would run at the track-- and I'm not sure if it's mental or physical, but it seems a lot tougher on the treadmill. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's mental. The snow is expected to stick around for a couple more days. Snow, snow go away......

You can run, but you can't hide Lawrence! I don't think that you will ever get good quality running on the dreadmill. But, what the heck!
Is Audrey having fun with the snow?
By the way, I forgot to mention that I got to race a horse a few times this morning on the local half-mile track. What a rush! She was just jogging, but it was all that I could do to hang with her for 200 metres. I ran the straight in front of the grandstands with her on 4 of her laps - about 200 to 220 metres. She is a "trotter" and pulls a sulky. I went talk with her trainer later to thank him for the opportunity. He told me that when she is racing that she can do the mile in 1:58. At a jogging pace, she was running at about 4:30 per mile. Her trainer said that you could tell that she was getting into it because she would tempo up just a little bit when she could see me ahead of her on the straight. You will have to try it if you ever get a chance.
Hi Lorne,
Yep, Audrey loves the snow! Now you want me to race a horse, with a jogging pace of 4:30/mile! I hope this isn't going in the plan! It's challenging enough trying to keep up with Patrick, Charlie et al.
Lorne,
What an experience! I can only imagine how cool that must have been.
Thanks for sharing
Patrick
