I remember when I was 14; I was doing a fitness test. I was expressing my effort through my facial expressions and my Coach came up and said, “what are you doing?” I proceeded to tell him that it was tough, he said “of course its tough so why the grimace?”

I hate to bring Lance into this but this was before everything got Lance-ified. My coach pointed out that Lance never grimaced in the Tour, mean while you could feel the pain his rivals felt by watching they’re facial expressions.

Facial expressions signal biological responses to stress. Look calm and relaxed and you tend to feel better considering the circumstances. This has stuck with me through the years and I’ve had better performances because of it.

“Of course its tough”, Whether your goal is to complete a 5km or like Lawrence, who will be at Stevston 8km this weekend and out to achieve his best on that day. I’m sure we can all agree that we do it because it’s a challenge, because it’s “tough”.

JM thanks for the kind words,

Patrick
P.S.
Lawrence have fun this weekend!
