Loon Lake Race

Today was the 12th annual Loon Lake Race. This for me was to be a hard effort, and a tune up for my 10k race in a couple of weeks. The weather was light rain, and there were only a few puddles along the trail, the bridges were slippery and it paid to pay some attention to your footing crossing these. Last night, the way the rain and wind were sounding, it could have been a lot worse out there today.

I started out fairly briskly and was happy with the way I felt with my first 7K. I was just meters behind Charlie at 6k and at one point put in a slight surge to catch up. I asked if he wanted to take turns with the lead, but he didn't respond. He was wearing an iPod, so he either ignored me or continued to listen to some bad rap music. I'm guessing it was the latter. It was at about the 7k point that Charlie put some distance on me and I found myself running alone. It was a bit lonely, and I found I took a "mental" break and didn't keep the pressure on as much as I could have. This though, in retrospect, is far from a disaster, as it's the race in two weeks where I want the competitive fires burning brighter. I ran without a watch so I had no idea of splits or times till it was over. I finished in 52:58 which is decent but not scintillating, as I've run close to this in training last year with Greg T.

A good morning for a run, though nicer weather would have brought out more participants. There was nice after-race food and coffee. Coffee is always the cats meow! Starbucks was definitely in my good books after the race!

Congratulations to Charlie N. and Lisa M. for finishing in first place.
