This morning I awoke to a beautiful day and picked up Steve B. to head to Loon lake. It was much easier getting motivated knowing I was driving up and running with someone at the lake. The first thing we saw as we made our way to the trail head was a hand written sign from the park operator warning of a cougar sighting. This was not an encouraging sign, as I've often pictured myself as being prime cougar bait. I'm probably just the right size for a cougar to strike from behind, cutting my jugular in one fell swoop and my running career coming to a quick, bloody end. At least I had someone to run with for part of the trail; two bodies I hoped were better than one. It would give the big cat hesitation in seeing two people, as it wouldn't be worth the energy expenditure to go after a (seemingly) bigger target.
We warmed up for one k and headed to the "0" marker, We took it out briskly to start and my first "km" was two seconds faster than last weeks. I felt great for the first 4K and then it started feeling like work when Steve B. dropped off and I was alone in the bush with all the lions, tigers, and, er, wildlife. I completed the loop in 52:34 which was 1:04 min. faster than last week, so my pace was encouraging. I think the pace was probably near 1/2 marathon race pace. Steve B. was not far behind and he had a great run. We cooled down for a couple of km, and a good, solid tempo workout was done.
The only wildlife I ended up seeing were a few snakes, birds, one squirrel, and someone's rat-like dog. No kitty's, which was a very good thing......Perhaps my pace was quickend this week with thoughts and images of a large feline munching on some choice meat.
