An ugly time trial

After a warmup, drills, strides, and a couple each of 400/200/100's, I was to do a 3K time trial. The weather was great, and I had a good workout leading up to the time trial. I was to do the 3K blind, and wasn't to look at my watch; run by feel. I was pumped up to run a quicker time than a couple of weeks ago. Maybe a bit too pumped up......

I started off, and by 300m I knew I had gone out too fast, I made the quick decision to check my watch just once at the 400 mark, and it read 1:15. This was too fast. I clicked my watch at 1K for later analysis, and it turned out to be a respectable 3:25. The trouble was, that time was all front-end loaded in the first lap. I struggled for the next 2K, finishing in 10:50 which was 5 sec. slower than the last time I did this two weeks ago. I was breathing hard with 3 laps to go and it felt already like the last 400m of a race. The 10:45 from two weeks ago was soft, and today's result was disappointing because of that, but the positive I can take from today's TT is that I know exactly what the problem was. I guess that's why this is training and why we call it that.

Later, I had a good discussion with Coach, and he made some tweaks to my training over the next few weeks, specifically to do some work on a few skill patterns.

The 3-k TTs can be tough; don’t beat yourself up too much. You learned a valuable lesson and this week’s effort is in the bank (you’ll still reap rewards). You’ve also been doing a lot of hills lately, although building strength they may not translate into an increase in speed without any speedplay.
